In addition to its tendency to frizz and its unpredictability, curly hair can have another drawback. Curly hair clogs drains.

A company has come out with a unique, inexpensive product designed to easily unclog drains without chemicals. The Zip-It is a long, thin piece of very flexible, highly durable plastic with barbs along its edge. To unclog a drain, you slip the patented Zip-It into any drain, push it all the way in, and pull out the clog. When used periodically, Zip-It will prevent larger problems from developing and save you from having to resort to other drain-cleaning methods: plunger, snake or plumbing service.

Gene Luoma invented Zip-It, and his nephew/marketer Dan Stocke is so proud of the product that he even posts pictures of what one customer pulled out of the drain with a Zip-It. It’s not a picture for the faint of heart!

The Zip-It web site illustrates where liquid drain cleaners land in the trap and shows how most clogs usually occur at the stopper mechanism. The site provides some solid advice on keeping drains running free and how to handle clogs that go beyond the length of the Zip-It.

The $2.00 Zip-It is distributed by Cobra, a Masco company. It can be found at all Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, Walgreen’s and other stores. Or check out Zip-It’s web site for a list of retailers.
